onomastico / saint’s name day – original poem and translation

onomastico

per F.d’A.

ti demmo il nome

come San Francesco

d’Assisi (la femmina)

una preghiera per chiamarti

avevi sempre bisogno dell’intercessione

per ogni soffio, pure la sete

come un santo, chiamare qualcuno

forse sbagliare, farsi affogare

nella povertà del corpo

e i miracoli,

la risacca onomastica

un mese dopo ti

trovammo il sacchetto

da seppellire

al volo: ebbero raccolsero

reliquie nel caso

di beatificazione o di eresia

saint’s name-day

per F.d’A.

 we named you

for Saint Francis

of Assisi (the feminine)

a prayer to call you by

you always needed intercession

for each breath, even thirst

to name someone after a saint

is maybe to err, to drown her

in poverty of body

and miracles,

the backwash of name-day

a month later we found

your burial bag

in flight: they had collected

your relics

in case of

beatification or heresy

(original and translation by Sophie Curzon-Siggers; original published in ‘Autoritratto con le pinne’, Gazebo Verde, 2013) )
